At our Hope Centre in Mathews Meyiwa Street (old Stamford Hill Road), we work with the children living on the streets of Durban. Our Outreach Team interacts with the children on the street and builds relationships with them. Once a basis of trust is formed between Outreach Worker and child, the children are invited to join in the programmes at the Hope Centre. It is there that a plan for each individual child is established and staff from various teams are called to action. Our Social Worker completes Outreach Intervention Forms for the children and determines whether the child is able to go straight home or needs rehabilitation. Often children who have only been on the streets for a short time are able to return home once our team has conducted a home assessment, established the reason for the child being on the streets and worked with the childs' family. If a child has been sniffing glue, it is imperitive that they attend rehabilitation. At our rehabilitation centre, we deal with substance abuse, however, if we feel a child is severely addicted to drugs such as Ecstacy, Coke or "Sugars", we do refer them to Harmony Rehabilitation Centre in Greytown.
