After successfully completing rehabilitation, former street children who are unable to return home are placed in the care of an I Care family home in Lower Illovo on the South Coast of KZN. Each home houses 6 children and is run by Christian house parents. Elements of the Khuthaza programme are reinforced at the homes and children are taught to adapt to a more formal home / school routine. Children attend extra murals such as swimming, surfing, art etc and also attend church on a Sunday. The children are taught social interaction skills and very quickly learn to get along with their "siblings" and "parents". Our house parents spend time at the Rehabilitation Centre in Umuzi in the mornings while their children are at school, so that they can get to know the children that will soon be living with them. The children in the houses interact with the children in rehabilitation once a week, either playing a friendly soccer match or going for a swim at the beach. It is so much easier for both parties that they know each other when "new siblings" move in! |
